Greetings, members and friends.
As results season gets underway, I am pleased to present you our fifth newsletter for the year to keep you up-to-date on recent news and happenings within the Association and the IR industry.
Review of September and October 2015
September and October were another two extremely eventful months for IRPAS. We partnered with the Chartered Institute of Management Accounts (CIMA), National Institute of Investor Relations (NIRI), Singapore Institute of Directors (SID), Securities Investors Association (Singapore) (SIAS), and Global Initiatives to bring you relevant events to the IR profession.
IRPAS has also been active regionally, as I spoke about the importance of the investor relations function to companies listed on the Ho Chi Minh stock exchange, and to the Ayala Group at an internal conference in Manila this month.
CIMA-IIRC Roundtable “Integrated Thinking, Integrated Reporting”
On 2nd September, IRPAS partnered CIMA and the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) on a roundtable discussion titled “Integrated Thinking, Integrated Reporting”. We were pleased to see our members participate in this event, which featured guest speakers from the Singapore Accountancy Commission (SAC), Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and City Developments, on the importance and benefits to organisations of taking an integrated approach in thinking about and reporting their value creation.
From left to right: Yvonne Chan (CFO and Director of Corporate Development, MPA), Uantchern Loh (CEO, SAC), Charles Tilley (CEO, CIMA), Dr Ernest Kan (Chairman, ISCA <IR> Steering Committee), Paul Druckman (CEO, IIRC), Esther An (Chief Sustainability Officer, CDL) and Mikkel Larsen (Managing Director and Head of Tax and Accounting Policy, DBS Bank)
NIRI IR Wisdom Roadshow 2015
On 7th October, we were pleased to partner NIRI and Ipreo for the IR Wisdom Roadshow 2015, which aims to promote the IR profession through increased awareness and exposure. This was the first time NIRI brought their highly successful IR Wisdom Roadshow to Singapore, and we are honoured to support the sharing of ideas and cross-fertilisation of IR best practice between the East and the West. We are particularly encouraged that Singapore has been included in this year’s programme, which is reflective of the focus on, and progress of the IR practice here. For members who wish to revisit the slides, you may view them here.
Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange-Maybank Kim Eng “Vietnam Investor Relations Forum”
On 16th October, I was invited in my capacity as President of IRPAS to the Vietnam Investor Relations Forum, jointly organised by Maybank Kim Eng and Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HOSE), to speak to the CEOs, CFOs, and IROs of listed companies on the HOSE on the importance of a good IR programme and effective targeting and engagement of investors. The event was well covered by media including The Voice of Vietnam, Saigon Times and Vietnam Investment Review. You may view the VIR coverage here.
Ayala Group Investor Relations Forum
IRPAS was also invited by the Ayala Group, one of the oldest and largest business groups in the Philippines, to speak to some 20 CFOs and IROs from its group of companies in Manila on 20th October. I presented on IR trends, the equity markets and engagement with the buy/sell side at the seminar, and was joined by our Secretariat, Tulchan Communication’s Senior Partner, Angela Campbell-Noë, who discussed the importance of communications and media engagement to IR, international IR best practice, as well as strategies for messaging and development of an IR/media engagement plan. Other speakers on the forum included Dr. David Smith, Head of Corporate Governance, Aberdeen Asset Management Asia and Sin Yang Fong, VP, Group Investor Relations & Communications, Singtel who both shared valuable insights from the buy-side perspective and on industry best practice.
All four speakers later convened at an interactive panel session to address questions from the Ayala participants on a wide range of topics pertaining to their businesses, including investor relations, crisis management and corporate governance best practices.
Noble Group: the Saga and its Lessons
IRPAS partnered with the Singapore Institute of Directors to offer our members discounted access to an insightful sharing session on 14th October, by Noble’s CEO, Mr Yusuf Alireza, independent director, Mr David Yeow and a panel of distinguished legal, accounting and investor relations experts on the firm’s response to short-seller attacks and the lessons that Boards can learn from it. Mr Basskaran Nair, IRPAS Director, Adjunct Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore and one of the panellists, gave a presentation on the events of the Noble saga.
6th Singapore Corporate Governance Week
IRPAS was pleased to endorse SIAS’ 6th Singapore Corporate Governance Week, on 12th – 16th October, which offered members discounted access to the week’s programmes that included the Global Corporate Governance Conference and the Corporate Governance Forums.
Responsible Business Forum
IRPAS is proud to be partner of the 4th Responsible Business Forum on Sustainable Development (Singapore, 3 & 4 November), which will gather more than 500 business leaders, responsible investors, NGOs and policy-makers from around the world to share innovations and agree on practical solutions for climate action and delivering the sustainable development goals.
Jeannie Ong, Chief Strategic Partnership Officer at StarHub, and Director at IRPAS, will be speaking on the “Innovation in waste & recycling: Driving sustainable production and consumption” panel on 3 November 2015.
IRPAS is pleased to offer members a 20% discount on delegate passes (including early registration passes). Please register through this link here to enjoy the discount.
International Certificate in Investor Relations 2015
As we conclude the registrations for ICIR, we are heartened to see the continued interest in the examination, both locally and regionally. Just a gentle reminder to candidates that the examination will be held on Saturday, 28th November 2015, at the Singapore Exchange, Training Room 2, from 9am – 10am. IRPAS wishes all candidates the best of luck for the examination.
